This weekend marks the 8 weeks to go until the last frost here in Ann Arbor (~May 15).  It also is the best time to start the tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds indoors.

This year I am planning to grow 8 varieties of tomatoes, 5 varieties of peppers, and 2 varieties of eggplant.

These are the seeds I planted today:

Stay tuned as I will continue to update the blog with pictures of the first seedlings.

This is the first post in my new gardening blog. I write this post on a crisp 30 degree winter day here in Ann Arbor, only ~10 more days to the official start of Spring.

To begin this blog I thought I would post a great article from the New York Times about Michelle Obama’s push to bring back healthier/local eating here in the US, and try to reverse all of the horrible decisions the Bush administration made during its 8 horrendous years in office.

My reasoning for purchasing a garden plot this summer was because I have been so inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s asking of the American people to give up some of your time to volunteer and help others in your community. My plan is to plant an extra plant of each of the things we grow, when we start getting produce it will be donated to Food Gatherers to help out those less fortunate.

One of the other cool things about this gardening idea was that I was able to get some friends together to also plant a garden. We are meeting in just a couple of days to discuss the things we are each going to grow. We have decided to purchase only heirloom seeds from a website call Seed Savers Exchange (http://www.seedsavers.org/). My thought is that we would also help each other throughout the summer, whether it be planting, watering, or just advice. Below is a prelimary list of the things we may grow this summer.
